RNS 310 from Blaupunkt for the VW Golf VI |
Its functional front design with surfaces finished in black frames a high-quality 13-cm sized color touch screen. In combination with easy-to-operate keys and a central knob to turn or press, the touch screen allows for intuitive operation that makes life easy. A special feature is the fact that these elements can be used parallel to one another: with the exception of just a few primary functions, the RNS 310 can be operated using the touch screen just as effectively as using the central knob.
A world’s first: copying navigation data in the device onto an SD card
The RNS 310 navigation system reliably guides the new Golf VI to its desti-nation without any of the usual driving stress – with precise visual and acoustic directional information and detailed 3-D map displays. Underway, the automatic zoom selects the best zoom level – depending on the road class and speed traveled. Within the city limits, it shows a detailed picture of the current road and on highways, there is a preview of up to 25 kilome-ters of the route up ahead – to provide optimal orientation in any situation. The navigation data is stored on a CD. However, the user can copy this data onto an SD or an MMC card (Secure Digital or Multi Media Card) di-rectly in the device – i.e. without having to use a PC. The SD card allows a considerably quicker calculation of the routes and the option of storing navigation data for several different countries and/or MP3 music files so that the CD player can be primarily used to play regular audio and MP3 CDs. SD cards with memories of up to 32 GBs can be used to store the navigation data. This means that countries can also be seamlessly con-nected with one another even though they may be originally stored on dif-ferent navigation disks. In other words, destination input and route guid-ance both operate cross-border – without requiring the data medium to be changed.
Destination input makes it possible to store and access up to 200 person-ally preferred destinations, along with the last 50 destinations stored. Dur-ing route guidance, filling stations and car parks in the vicinity, their dis-tances away and the driving direction can also be indicated on the screen. And such special destinations as airports, hospitals, restaurants, hotels or tourist attractions can be found within a radius of 75 kilometers using the free-text search and entering a key word and then directly selected.
Excellent reception quality thanks to the dual tuner
With the RNS 310 in the Volkswagen, Blaupunkt also delivers an audio quality that is designed to satisfy the most discerning tastes with respect to its reception concept, contemporary MP3 technologies and connection options. The receiver with the innovative ADR2 chip set (Advanced Digital Receiver) includes a digital dual tuner and reliable DDA technology (Digital Directional Antenna). With access to two antennas, it is the key to a signifi-cant improvement in reception performance. The car radio in the new Golf VI can take advantage of this technology to virtually eliminate multipath in-terference and to pick up more remote radio stations that were hardly au-dible before. When the radio station received sends a strong signal, the second tuner is also used to process and evaluate the traffic reports broadcast by the radio stations on the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for dynamic navigation in route calculation. The radio receives information on traffic congestion even when route guidance has not been activated. This is particularly useful and convenient for commuters on their daily travels to and from work.
The integrated CD player in the RNS 310 is just as skilled at playing regular CDs as it is at processing user-burned disks with MP3-compressed audio files. In addition, the radio is equipped with a memory-card slot on the front panel designed to accommodate the meanwhile very popular SD or MMC cards and an external connection for the operation of other audio sources, such as an MP3 player or an iPod. The large color screen is also able to display either just the stored or all the radio stations currently within reception range as well as track lists for the audio source selected to provide a very clear picture of the program and music selection avail-able. Depending on the vehicle features included, other functions can also be displayed optionally, such as the air conditioning or the visual parking assistant.
To ensure the safe use of the telephone in the vehicle, Volkswagen has also had the device prepared for the connection of a Bluetooth cell phone. At the touch of the PHONE button, the audio source currently in operation can be switched to mute or reactivated, as desired. And with an optional universal cell phone box, it is possible to connect a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone and operate it via the steering-wheel-mounted remote control – in-cluding hands-free talking and hands-free listening via the vehicles speak-ers.
With this integrated radio-navigation system from Blaupunkt, Volkswagen has placed its trust in innovative technologies and features that are cur-rently unrivaled in the entry-level segment with respect to audio and navi-gation performance as well as ease of operation and attractive price. Con-sequently, the Volkswagen Group will not only outfit the new Golf VI with the RNS 310; the new Polo, Touran and Passat as well as the Seat and Skoda will also soon be touring around with this attractively designed au-dio system on board.
